WHAT'S IN A FLAG?

THE ARTIST

The Nigerian flag was designed in 1959 by a Nigerian student living in England called Taiwo Akinkunmi.

Taiwo was studying electrical engineering at Norwich Technical College in England when his competition entry was chosen to be adapted for the Nigerian flag.

THE MEANING

The Nigerian flag is made up of two colours, green and white.

GREEN - represents natural agricultural wealth, Nigeria is blessed with rich soils that are great for growing almost anything.

WHITE - represents peace, maybe this was meant to signify the peaceful way Nigeria obtained its independence from Britain, but perhaps it also signifies the wish and the hope that Nigeria would always remain a peaceful country.

TIME TO TRY

  • Cut out a rectangle and design your own entry for a pretend new Nigerian flag competition.
